We'll miss you, Avis

Avis Richesin 4/7/1917 - 7/31/2009

Avis was a sweet sweet lady who attended the same bible class as I do on Fridays. She had been sick for a while now, but her mind was very sharp till the end, when a stroke on Monday night/Tuesday morning finally took her from us. She had a very interesting past, and had great wit and humor. At the point when I was working on getting my green card, she would joke that she had strong views about "illegal immigrants", but I was an exception because she liked me very much. LOL. Avis came to know the Lord late in life, and was baptised not that long ago. We will miss her upbeat spirit but we know she is in a much better place now.

Avis Byirl Richesin went to be with our Lord and Savior on July 31, 2009 and all her friends and family that preceded her in death.

The family will receive friends at a visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 4, 2009, at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory, Abilene. Burial will be in Flippin, Arkansas.

Avis was born April 7, 1917, the oldest of three children to Oscar and Lella Flippin in Flippin, Arkansas. She married Frank Richesin on September 14, 1939 in Marion County, Arkansas. They adopted daughter Amy in 1955. Avis worked for the Veterans Administration in West Los Angeles until she retired in 1968. She liked to read; loved music; and enjoyed working in her garden. Avis was a very kind and generous soul who never met a stranger. Her friends and family always held a special place in her life. She will be dearly missed by those who loved her.

Avis is survived by daughter Amy Cooke and son-in-law, Roy Cooke, of Abilene, Texas; her granddaughter, Jennifer Cooke and great-granddaughter, Caitlin Cooke, of Abilene, Texas; niece, Suanne Mandell of LaCanda, California; nephew, John Flippin of Argyle, Texas and Terry Bryd of Little Rock, Arkansas.

Memorials may be sent to the Food Bank of Abilene, Inc., 5505 North 1st, Abilene, Texas 79603 or Meals-on-Wheels Plus, Inc., P. O. Box 903, Abilene, Texas 79604.

Thanks for the information about Avis. She was a sweet old lady. I am sure that the Friday Bible study will not be the same without her.
